BSC is participating actively in the workshop series on Big Data and Extreme-scale Computing (BDEC) is premised on the idea that we must begin to systematically map out and account for the ways in which the major issues associated with Big Data intersect with, impinge upon, and potentially change the national (and international) plans that are now being laid for achieving exascale computing. The goal is to help the international community develop a plan for building a partnership to provide the next generation of HPC software to support big data and extreme computing for scientific discovery. Becas de ”la Caixa” para estudios de doctorado en universidades españolas (ref. BSC-Autonomic 01/2015) Acaba de abrirse la convocatoria de Becas para estudios de doctorado en universidades españolas de la obra social la Caixa y nuestro grupo de investigación tiene una posición de investigador/investigadora para cursar el doctorado en el contexto del Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) y dentro del programa de doctorado Arquitectura de Computadores de la UPC Barcelona Tech (que cumple con el requisito de mención de calidad requerido en la convocatoria), para un candidato o candidata que consiga esta beca. David Carrera selected for ERC Starting Grant

David Carrera, one of the senior researchers in our research group, have been selected for a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant, for his project Holistic Integration of Emerging Supercomputing Technologies (Hi-EST). This first Starting Grant competition under the EU's Horizon 2020 programme awards early-career talent to develop their ambitious high-risk, high-gain research projects. David received the MS degree in 2002 and his PhD in 2008 and since then he has been leading several EU and industrial research projects in our group. David is an outstanding researcher, a Messi in our research group!. BSC releases COMPSs version 1.2 at SC14

COMPSs is a framework for easily implement distributed applications. APIs that make it easier to create predictive models

Our research group is working in Data Analytics, where predictive modelling play an important role. Predictive modelling is an important process by which a model is created or chosen to try to best predict the probability of an outcome. Most often the event one wants to predict is in the future, but predictive modelling can be applied to any type of unknown event, regardless of when it occurred. BSC releases COMPSs software for large scale parallelisation

The Grid Computer and Clusters team at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre has released COMPSs, a set of tools designed to help developers run applications efficiently on distributed systems such as clusters, grids, and clouds. Our research group is using this programming model in some of our ongoing research work. COMPSs is a task based programming model known for notably improving the performance of large scale applications by automatically parallelising their execution. The new release includes PyCOMPSs, a new binding for Python which provides support to large number of scientific disciplines. It also includes some important features as a new tracing system using the Extrae tool and an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for COMPSs applications that help in the development of the applications and in its deployment in the distributed [...]

Business-Driven Resource Allocation and Management for Data Centers in the Cloud Markets

This week, Mario Macias, one of the researchers in our research group, did their PhD dissertation. The work is centered in the Cloud Computing arena. Cloud Computing markets arise as an efficient way to allocate resources for the execution of tasks and services within a set of geographically dispersed providers from different organisations. Client applications and service providers meet in a market and negotiate for the sales of services by means of the signature of a Service Level Agreement that contains the Quality of Service terms that the Cloud provider has to guarantee by managing properly its resources. Current implementations of Cloud markets have certain weaknesses at this level. Research: Self-configuration of Cloud infrastructures

This morning, Nico Poggi, one of the researchers in our research group, did their PhD dissertation. It was fantastic! I'm proud of Nico's work, related with dynamic resource provisioning based on revenue and cost metrics, to optimize profits for consumers of Cloud platforms. The results are based on real datasets from a well known Ecommerce retailer founded in Barcelona several years ago (although today it is a world-wide scope company): The last part of the PhD achievements are extraordinary, based on user behaviour models that relate Quality-of-Service to service capacity, and to the intention of users to buy a product on an Ecommerce site.
