Ordenadores más sabios (artículo en La Vanguardia)

May 19th, 2015|

How old do I look?

May 1st, 2015|

[Traducción automática a Español] [Traducció automàtica a Català] Yesterday Ruben Tous, the senior researcher in our group sent to me a link to Microsoft “Project Oxford”, a set of new machine-learning APIs in beta. Then  I discovered that  Microsoft released a fun new website, How-Old.net, which calculates your age , with varying degrees of success , after you upload a photo. You can upload a selfie or type your name into the search bar at how-old.net to do Bing image search, and Microsoft’s tool takes a stab at guessing your age and gender. I tried ( vanity is a funny thing) this picture with Emma Aixalà,  a charming journalist with whom I shared a radio station program two years ago in RAC1. Emma, Is the information correct? Or actually look younger than you are? :-) Let's talk seriously!. As I [...]

What we mean by Cognitive Computing

April 22nd, 2015|

We are entering a new era in computing that departs form the current model of computing as process automation to provide a collaborative platform for discovery to gain actionable insights. To do so, research community are including advanced analytics tools in the systems middleware to offer predictive models . Thanks to the advent of Big Data these models can be improved, or “trained”, by exposing them to large data sets that were previously unavailable. The general idea is that instead of instructing a computer what to do, we are going to simply throw data at the problem and tell the computer to figure it out itself.  For this purpose the computer middleware takes functions from the brain like: inference, prediction, correlation, abstraction, … giving to the systems to possibility to do [...]

Cognitive Computing: Benefits and Challenges of Next Tech Revolution

April 15th, 2015|

Today THE DIGITAL POST have published an article from Mateo Valero and Jordi Torres!  We present the benefits and challenges of  "Cognitive Computing". For today world it is required a continuous development of supercomputing systems enabling the convergence of advanced analytic algorithms and big data technologies driving new insights based on the massive amounts of available data. This will be one of the strategic areas in the next future at BSC. We refer to this as  “Cognitive Computing” (others use Smart Computing, Intelligent Computing, etc.). Enclosed you will find a copy of the article. We hope that this could help you to understand the new computing wave! that makes context computable with systems that embed predictive capabilities, providing the right functionality and content at the right time, for the right application, by continuously learning about [...]

Internet global como una nueva galaxia

March 24th, 2015|

2nd meeting of the Multimedia Big Data Computing Lab

March 19th, 2015|

I was invited to attend to the 2nd meeting of the Multimedia Big Data Computing Lab (MBDCLab), chaired by Ruben Tous, a senior research member in our team. The meeting took place on Monday 16th, at UPC Campus Nord. The MBDCLab is an ad-hoc interest group of people working on topics related to distributed computing systems that enable massive scale image and video analytics in real-time. While the most part of efforts related to Big Data are nowadays focusing on text-based big data analytics, multimedia data, which makes up about 2/3 of internet traffic, provide unprecedented opportunities for understanding and responding to real world situations and challenges. Most current big data systems are very restrictive as then cannot handle data types other than text or numbers. The [...]

Chef Watson vs Carme Ruscalleda: Cognitive Computing in the cuisine

March 10th, 2015|

In 2011  IBM Watson computer defeated two of Jeopardy's greatest champions (on the television quiz show Jeopardy) and won fame as the artificially intelligent computer system that won $1 million for whipping former Jeopardy! champs Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Since then, acording Mike Rhodin (senior vice president of IBM Watson) Watson supercomputer has become 24 times faster and smarter, 90% smaller, with a 2,400% improvement in performance. And since its commercial launch a year ago, the Watson Group has collaborated with partners to build 6,000 apps. Today I read in The Daily Dot that IBM is using its supercomputer Watson to ignite new ideas and inspire both professional chefs and DIY home cooks to push the boundaries of their current culinary capabilities. Great!. "Chef Watson" has natural language processing capabilities in which a huge corpus [...]

Talking about Cognitive Computing Platforms with Barcelona GSE Master Data Science Students

March 9th, 2015|

Last week I gave a conference to Master Data Science students at Barcelona Graduated School of Economics.  We started talking about Big Data, the newest and one of the most exciting technologies currently available to business and society.  We pay attention that the technology is often so subtle that people have no idea that big data is actually helping make their lives easier. The talk was centered to the advent of new technologies as cognitive computing, that will have the potential to augment our reasoning capabilities and empower us to make better informed real-time decision.  Undoubtedly Cognitive Computing will change the way we work and live. Gaston Besanson was the organiser. I enjoyed being with you. Thank you Gaston for this gift! You can download the complete presentation (54 slides) from this link.
