Marenostrum 4 will come in production on July 1st

Today, Sergi Girona, Operations Director at BSC,  inform as that on July 1st  MareNostrum 4 will come in real production for the first research projects that uses the general purpose block of Marenostrum 4. Great new!  I want to thanks the Operations department for their maratonian work. MareNostrum IV peak power is 11.15 Petaflops, or what is the same, it is able to perform more than eleven thousand trillion operations per second, ten times more than the MareNostrum3, which was installed between 2012 and 2013. Although its power is ten times greater than that of its predecessor, it only increases energy consumption by a 30% and now is of 1.3 MWatt/year. It have two distinct parts: General Purpose part and Emerging Technologies part. General Purpose  MareNostrum IV is a supercomputer based [...]

‘MareNostrum’: la supercomputadora capaz de realizar 1.100 billones de operaciones por segundo

2017-08-08T22:42:11+00:00 May 2nd, 2016|

:-( ). Sin duda el mérito es del equipo [...]

INTERNATIONAL PHD IN DEEP LEARNING & HPC FOR COMPUTER VISION

2017-08-09T12:14:09+00:00 February 7th, 2016|

The Research Group Autonomic Systems and eBusiness Platforms at Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), invites outstanding candidates to apply for a full-time PhD position under "Becas de posgrado de La Caixa"  grants (link) or "International PhD Program Fellowship BSC La Caixa" grants (link). The PhD work will focus on Deep Learning and High Performance Computing for computer vision. PhD project description Deep learning has changed the scape of computer vision and artificial intelligence. Current research in these areas has shown the possibility of creating tools that are able to recognize thousands of objects, or automatically describe the content in an image. For example, Google Brain approach to automatic captioning is able to reliably describe many complex images using this basic queues. However, human understanding of images is far more elaborated. Humans do not [...]

Spark Summit: Stories about Spark, HPC and Barcelona

2017-08-09T12:15:26+00:00 November 25th, 2015|

Dear readers, I’m a little bit late posting this information, but I have been up to my eyes with work!. Few weeks ago I attended the European Spark Summit held in Amsterdam. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet and talk with the spark community. The summit started with Matei Zaharia, who talked about how spark usage is evolving and Ion Stoica talking about how Spark is entering into enterprises. There were a lot of interesting presentations. You can download them and see the recorded video presentations on this web site. BSC also gave a presentation where we presented what we are doing with Spark in our research supercomputing center in Barcelona. Below you can find the slides that we presented. Attending the summit also gave us the opportunity [...]

Marenostrum visit with Supercomputer Architecture students

Enclosed you will find some pictures of our visit with David Vicente. Thank you David for the explanations. we really enjoyed the visit an it will be very useful for my course. Now, you can see some pictures from last year visit with Sergi Girona. Thank you Sergi for your explanations, we really enjoyed the visit and was an excellent introduction to the course.

More than 100 Supercomputer experts gather in Barcelona this week

BSC is participating actively in the workshop series on Big Data and Extreme-scale Computing (BDEC) is premised on the idea that we must begin to systematically map out and account for the ways in which the major issues associated with Big Data intersect with, impinge upon, and potentially change the national (and international) plans that are now being laid for achieving exascale computing. The goal is to help the international community develop a plan for building a partnership to provide the next generation of HPC software to support big data and extreme computing for scientific discovery. The third meeting in this series of 2-day workshops will be held in Barcelona, on January 29th and 30th, Thursday and Friday, with a reception on Wednesday, January 28th. Along with application leaders confronting [...]
